  8.     These twelve stories issue up-to-the-minute dispatches from
  9. the sexual wars, and the news is not good for either side. The
  10. men, selfish and distracted, bolt at the first hint of that
  11. dread word, commitment. The women work at being hip and wary but
  12. are as overmastered by virility as any Victorian maiden ("With
  13. his touch, the will seemed to drain out of her"). Susan Minot,
  14. who made a notable debut with her 1986 novel Monkeys, has a
  15. laser instinct for the clinching detail and the giveaway phrase.
  16. She can summon descriptive power when she wants it ("Clouds rose
  17. up, golden, fisted, dwarfing the islands"). But the very unity
  18. of this collection produces a sameness. The reader begins to
  19. wonder, Doesn't Minot know anyone who is married, or older than
  20. thirtysomething? Doesn't she ever look beyond these modish
  21. urban lofts and restaurants? Henry Kissinger once remarked of
  22. Singaporean statesman Lee Kuan Yew that he needed a larger
  23. country for his talents. Minot, a writer to watch, needs a
  24. larger subject.
